Cipriano de Rore (1516-1565) was one of the most important composers of the Renaissance. Part of the great Franco-Flemish migration of composers and chapelmasters to Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, he worked in Venice, Ferrara and Parma, in the service of dukes and doges. He composed in all of the significant vocal genres of the art music of his time—madrigals, masses, motets, chansons. But it was especially in the realm of Italian secular music that he would make an enduring contribution. After his death, he soon acquired mythic status, regularly described by writers as “il divino Cipriano.” No less a composer than Claudio Monteverdi would recognize his originality and significance.
It is arguable that no other such pivotal figure in music history has received so little scholarly attention. The time is ripe to take stock of the tasks that lie ahead. This international conference will bring together scholars who will discuss de Rore and his music from a variety of perspectives.
